Dermal Anchor Aftercare

  • Dermal piercings are more prone to migration and rejection than a regular body piercing, it is important to follow the aftercare instructions to help minimize these complications
  • You should avoid touching your new piercing without first washing your hands, and you should not let other people touch it at all, as it is an open wound disease transmission is possible
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing around your new piercing
  • Avoid alcohol, nicotine,  and sumberging your dermal in pools, hot tubs and baths
  • Each time you clean your piercing you should wash your hands with warm soapy water first, you do not however want to use soap to clean the piercing as it will be very drying
  • It can be cleaned with a home made solution of 1/4 teaspoon of non iodized sea salt- 1 cup of distilled water kept in a clean, sealed container(warm the water to help the salt dissolve). You may also choose to add a drop of tea tree oil as it is a natural antiseptic, or you can purchase saline wound wash or antiseptic piercing rinse at most drug stores
  • Use cotton balls or swabs and dispose of them after each use (if you are busy its a good idea to pre soak cotton balls in solution and keep those in a sealed container you can keep with you for easier cleaning on the go)
  • You will need to clean your new dermal piercing 3-6 times a day and it is advisable to  'soak' it for 5 minutes 2 times per day (using a medical saline solution)
  • Apply even gentle pressure to the top of the dermal with your cotton ball and hold there for 30-60 seconds; make sure the jewellery is not being tilted as you do so; make sure you are doing this 3-6 times per day, you can then use the cotton ball to wipe away and 'crusties' before discarding it. When you do your 5 minute soaks you should use a new cotton ball for every minute of the soak
  • Continue with this routine for at least 6 weeks, do not change the top for at least 3 months
  • Clear or white discharge (lymphatic fluid) is normal, yellow thick discharge (pus) is a sign that you need ramp up your aftercare routine and possibly see a physician
